Syria

Hezbollah said Imad Mughniyeh, a senior member of the group, was recently killed in an explosion in a residential area of Damascus. Hezbollah blamed Israel for his death, but Israel denied involvement.

Mughniyeh was one of the most notorious terrorists of the late 20th century. He was suspected of involvement in bombings of the US embassy and a US Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983. He was involved in the hijacking of TWA Flight 847 in 1985. He was suspected of involvement in some of the kidnapings of Westerners in Beirut in the 1980s, and in bomb attacks on Jewish targets in Argentina in the early 1990s. US officials believed he was involved in providing weapons to Palestinian terrorists in 2002, and in attacks on Israeli troops at the start of the Israel-Hezbollah war in southern Lebanon in 2006. They also believed Mughniyeh was involved in training elements of Moqtada al Sadr's militia in Iraq. (CNN.com)

Serbia

Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, speaking at a meeting of the UN Security Council, said, "Let me be very clear. The Republic of Serbia shall never accept any violation of its territorial integrity....We shall never recognize Kosovo's independence. We shall not waiver, we shall not yield, should this cowardly act proceed unchecked. Not now. Not in a year. Not in a decade. Never....We shall undertake all diplomatic, political and economic measures designed to impede and reverse this direct and unprovoked attack on our sovereignty." Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said, "The greatest humiliation for Serbia would be to give even indirect consent to the existence of this puppet creation on its territory....Kosovo belongs solely and only to Serbia," he said. "Kosovo is ours and we will never give it to anyone."(CNN.com)

Cyprus, politics

In the first round of a presidential election on the 17th Ioannis Kasoulidis and Dimitris Christofias edged out incumbent Tassos Papadopoulos. In the runoff on the 24th Christofias defeated Kasoulidis by a 53.4% to 46.6% margin. Christofias promised to renew negotiations with the Turkish Cypriots to reunify the island. Pakistan, politics

Elections were held for the 342-seat National Assembly, and the result was a major victory for the political opposition. The Pakistan People's Party Parliamentarians (PPPP), led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, son of the late Benazir Bhutto, won 121 seats. Though Nawaz Sharif was banned from running, his Pakistan Muslim League, Nawaz Sharif faction (PML-N) won 91 seats. The Musharraf-allied Pakistan's Muslim League (PML-Q) won 54 seats, down from 126. Uganda

Negotiators for the government and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels signed an agreement outlining how allegations of crimes committed during the rebellion will be handled. Those charged with severe crimes will be tried by the High Court while allegations of lesser crimes will be handled by Uganda's traditional justice system, known as Mato Put. (AP)


Armenia, politics

A presidential election was held in which Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian defeated former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan. The OSCE said the election was mostly in line with international standards. However, the political opposition accused the government of vote fraud. Tens of thousands of people began demonstrating daily in Yerevan, and there were some clashes with police at the beginning of March. (CNN.com)

Cuba, politics

On the 19th Fidel Castro announced his resignation, citing health reasons for his decision. On the 24th the National Assembly selected his brother, armed forces minister Raul Castro, to be president of the Council of State and of the Council of Ministers. Gen. Serbia

In Belgrade, about 150,000 people participated in a demonstration against Kosovo's independence. A small group of protesters attacked the US embassy. (CNN.com)

Iraq

On the 21st there were reports that the Turkish army had launched an incursion into northern Iraq against elements of the PKK. In the following days the Iraqi government said fewer than 1,000 Turkish troops had moved a few kilometers into Iraq. By the 29th they had withdrawn. The Turkish military said that while "completely liquidating the terrorist organization" was not possible, "Turkey has shown the organization that northern Iraq is not a safe haven for them." Diplomatic affairs, Iran

In a report to the IAEA Board of Governors, IAEA Director Mohamed ElBaradei said that recent investigation by the Agency and cooperation by Iranian officials meant that several questions about Iran's nuclear program, including some uranium particle contamination at a site and uranium-related mining and research, were no longer considered outstanding by the Agency. However, there were still some questions, particularly regarding a document on uranium metal machining and other alleged studies related to nuclear military applications. (www.iaea.org)
