There were battles in Mogadishu between Ethiopian and government troops and remnant fighters from the Islamic Courts Union. The government and its Ethiopian backers made two major efforts to wipe out the Islamic rebels. On the 26th the government said it had defeated the rebels in the city and that the worst of the fighting was over. (AP)

In Baghdad, a suicide attack on parliament killed lawmaker Mohammed Awadh and wounded 22 other people in the parliament's cafeteria. Also, a suicide truck bomb attack on the al-Sarafiya bridge killed ten (CNN.com).

Four bomb attacks in Baghdad killed at least 40 (CNN.com).
A referendum was held on whether to establish a National Constitutional Assembly with full powers to rewrite the country's constitution, something favored by President Rafael Correa. 81.7% voted in favor; turnout was 71.6%. (IFES, Reuters) Elections for the 130-member assembly were scheduled for 30 September.
In Karachi, about 100,000 people participated in a rally, organized by the Mutahida Qami Movement (MQM), against the Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) in Islamabad. The Lal Masjid had recently announced an anti-vice campaign (AP).

President Bush, referring to the situation in Sudan's Darfur region and to Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, said, "President Bashir should take the last chance by responding to the [UN] secretary general's efforts and to meet the just demands of the international community....I'm also looking at what steps the international community could take to deny Sudan's government the ability to fly its military aircraft over Darfur, and if we don't begin to see signs of good-faith commitments, we will hear calls for even sterner measures." In an election for the successor to President Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Yar'Adua, candidate for the ruling People's Democratic Party, greatly outpolled his nearest rival, Muhammadu Buhari, according to the government's electoral officials.
