Thailand, politics

Early parliamentary elections were held on the 2nd; they had been called by Prime Minister Thaskin in response to opposition demands that he resign over perceptions of corruption and abuse of power. Thaskin had promised that he would resign if his party received less than 50% of the vote. Three opposition parties had boycotted the vote; they did not field any candidates and urged voters to tick the 'no vote' box on their ballots. In the event, the 'no votes' took a significant percentage of the vote, particularly in urban areas. Also, many seats were uncontested and had to remain empty, lacking a minimum number of votes, effectively preventing a new government from being formed.

On the 4th, Thaskin, after meeting with King Bhumibol Adulyadej, announced he was taking "a break" from politics and handed his duties over to Deputy Prime Minister Chidchai Vanasatidya (Reuters, CNN.com).
